What exactly is a disc herniation? It is a unique condition that is very common in the lower spine and neck as well. It occurs when there is excessive pressure that acts upon the intervertebral discs (the water filled "shock-absorbers" between the bones in our spines). Discs are kind of like jelly filled donuts, except different :) There is an inner and an outer tissue in a disc. The inner part is called the nucleus pulposus, its the jelly inside the jelly filled donut. The outer portion is called the annulus fibrosis, its the dough of the donut. In order for the disc to "herniate", the outer portion of the disc tears which is painful and causes the "jelly" on the inside to push thru the outer portion and this press against the spinal nerves and cause some pretty significant pain. Disc herniations can cause shooting, stabbing leg pain known as sciatica, low back pain that is severe and worsens with leaning forward or sitting and also neck pain that can also be accompanied with shooting arm or shoulder pain and numb or tingling fingers or hands. NSSD -Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression has been researched and studied by Johns Hopkins, Stanford University and Mayo clinic among others to be highly effective in treating disc herniations without the use of drugs, injections or surgeries. Not everyone is a candidate and there are specific criteria we look for to determine if a patient is eligible for our treatment and program.
